AMC Hornet Front Bumper – From Junkyard to Brand New in a Week!

My latest project for #dumptruckhornet has been to get the “new” front bumper ready to install on the car. When the car was originally built by Jack Pennington he compressed the absorbers to recess the bumper into the fenders and removed all of the bumper bolts to clean up the look. I wanted to do that, but also take it a step further and also remove all of the black trim pieces.

I started with a ‘junkyard’ bumper, support, and absorbers – since it was cold and my wife wasn’t home I figured the living room was the perfect spot to disassemble and grind the rusted bolts off; fortunately I didn’t burn the house down. A quick trip to the sandblaster and an even quicker trip to the welding shop and I’ve got a killer bumper ready for hours of sand/fill/repeat! OH! I also “decompressed” the 5mph bumper absorbers, coating myself and my basement in 50 year old mystery oil, so thats great.
